Ever since debit cards were invented I have used them religously, but no until recently did I start using cash again. This new coin collecting hobby of mine has caused me to put the old debit card in the back of the wallet and start looking for a stray find in some pocket change. Do any of you folks use cash only with hopes of finding some pocket treasure? I know the chances of finding something of any worth are slim compared to bank roll searching, but you never know!

I use cash as much as possible, and I am oftentimes disappointed when a store rounds up a purchase to the nearest $.05, which gives me less pocket change.

Per-
This is exactly what I have done. The result is: not much. I've got a few wheats and one or two nickels in the 40's (no wars). But it's a simple way to get just a few more chances to find something great. Plus it gives me a way to spend all those half dollars that I get from the bank.
Happy hunting.

I deliberately avoid giving correct change just so that I can get coins back.

For small purchases I do use cash in hopes of a find. I found a cash of 2009 dimes this way. When I got the new shiny dimes back in change I asked if I could purchase a roll and did. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Cards make money for others.
Yes they do. I've been able to buy some nice coins with the cash back rewards they make.
The secret; Pay off the balance when it come due.

I don't use cash, but my wife does. I raid her wallet every week for the old carboy. Actually I drive her nuts because I inspect change from drive-thru's when they hand it back.

Its good to hear some of your replies. I'm sure all of you experienced collectors out there went through that obsessed period where you couldn't get away from coins! Some of my friends think I'm crazy!...and I am just a little! Ha

What do you mean "obsessed period"? I've been doing this off and on for over 50 years and I still can't wait to see if there is anything in my change. Coin collecting is either in your blood or it isn't. Glad to hear that I am not the only one who uses cash in order to get change back.

Likewise I try to use cash, just got my first circulating shield cents a few weeks ago this way, then I asked the girl if I could buy the rest she had, she reluctatly gave me two more but that made three.

Would any of you think less of me if I admitted to: Visiting my local casino... Putting $1 into a "penny-machine"... Placing a bet of $.01... Cashing out, and then taking the ticket to the change machine to get my $.99 in coins? Found a 1943 steel cent that way awhile back. I use cash whenever possible.

I agree with andrew! I always give strange amounts so I get more pennies back! The lady at the gas station where I go everyday always gives me 2009 or 2010 pennies or wheat pennies in my change!

I like it when a purchase rings up to something odd like $4.03. But the cashier will always grab 3 cents from the "give a penny - take a penny" and I always think Nooooo! :)
