1974 involves small and large date hubs for all three business strike mints. All of the known proof cents are large date.

The two different S mintmarks are split between the large and small dates on business strike coins. I have yet to see any that are interchanged. Seems all the small date business strike cents have the 1971 style mintmark, and all the large date business strike cents have the 1974 style mintmark. I have not yet had a chance to study the population of the mix between the 1971 and 1974 style mintmarks on the proofs (both do exist). Seems they are relatively equal in number. I have never had trouble finding either of them.

so ill look for a a 1974 small date with the large date 74 mint mark

and a 74 large date with a 71 style mint mark ?

that could be a possible error

Just for clarity, if you find one it would be considered a variety, not an error.

I usually look at IGWT 1st, lg. date has IGWT almost touching the rim, sm. date has a normal distance from rim.

Exactly...a coin with a different from usual mintmark style would be a variety - NOT an error. And yes, they are very fundamentally different.
