he said he would give me a full refund if something was wrong. I figured if you guys think it would grade decent enough I would get it and send it in to have it authenticated. also I am trying to see if he will send me better picks of it

since the pictures are not very good, you will not be able to tell if its not all scratched up,,,if its a friend you can settle on some general price range and confirm it when in hand...fair for you and him..

why is the S more valuable than the Philadelphia minted one? I mean mintage is 3 times more on the S

any coin with less mintage is worth more in general, with the exception of if the year with more mintage has fewer surviving coins in the market place..

Greysheet Bid on this coin is $3,000 in XF40 so it's a valuable piece. I can barely make out the mintmark in the photo.
Looks genuine but looks possibly cleaned as well. It's a tough call on value from those images.

Yes. Even if it's cleaned it should net grade no worse than VF20 and this date "Greysheets" at $1300 in VF20. Now if it comes back AU50 and problem-free, you've got a $6,000 coin but one less friend!

Need better pics to be able to comment accurately. Coin looks original and the wear looks like at least VF, maybe better. Have you looked at it under a microscope for hairlines? That would be a matter to consider prior to purchasing. If you have an original coin worth $3,000, I'm not sure that hairlines would bring it all the way down to $800, but they will bring the value down. My only other comment would be to "be a little bit cautious". If he's a gold dealer, he knows very well what the value of this coin is even though he may say he doesn't know or doesn't care. For those guys, it's all about the money.

You said he is your friend and he would give you a full refund. I would take it and if I did not like it then I would send it back.

Looks cleaned to me and worn to about VF-35 or EF-40. Still probably worth $800 easy. I'd go for it!
