I haven't bid on one of these in quite a while, but this one caught my fancy for some reason. Opinions?

No I don't collect these really, but one of the Ty1 SLQ's in that auction bore all the hallmarks of a 1916 (now that I'm educated by you and Nod) so I took a shot. It just got too rich for my blood.

You have a good eye my friend My max bid was $400, and I figured someone would come along and outbid me; but it never happened. The last lot like this I won for $400(though I bid $700 that time).

Thanks! It would have been cool to catch one under the radar. When you get it, please post pics. I'd love to see how it compares to the others.

We'll do. It's funny, because I havent really even searched these lots for a while....I was more focused on gold; I'm sure there are more out there that I've missed so keep looking.

Here is a blown up shot from the coin in the auction that we are referring to.

Standing-Liberty-Quarter-Lot

It looks somewhat weaker than the one I found several months ago....my guess is either a strong PR1 or weak FR2. Here is what the other one looked like from the blown up auction pictures(this one graded FR2 from ANACS, and is strong for the grade):

wow. 3 type 1's and a possible 1916 for $303. that's a steal imo. Still though, if it isn't a 1916 your not out too much.

thanks! I'm pretty confident that it is a 1916, though I could be wrong. Another major diagnostic that I learned more recently is the "box" area on the bulkhead(I have them circled). On the 1917, the box pattern lines are incuse, so it is very well detailed in the lower grades. It is excuse on the 1916, so only a faint shadow remains on the lower detailed coins. Even the very low grade(PR1) 1917 type 1 in this auction has clear box lines. I added this diagnostic to my pictures..

I think if it would have been a bit higher grade (AG3) I would have been more confident in my bidding. But I got delusional and thought that maybe one could retool at 1917 and reproduce some of the diagnostic features. Since they are selling the lot as bullion essentially, there would be nothing illegal in doing this aside from the defacing of money. But they would succeed in driving up the bid price if someone, like us, caught it.

I gotta stop watching TV. I see conspiracy everywhere.

Well, you're right; it is a gamble. The pictures are small and the coin is heavily worn; so it really comes down to how confident you are with limited information. I'm sure a good counterfeiter could get 1 or 2 of the diagnostics right with a little work, but when it comes to the more subtle things like areas of strike weakness that will make or break the overall "look" of the coin; I think it would be very difficult to do without making the coin look "messed with". Another diagnostic is that the stars are always much weaker on the 1916 going down the bulkhead. My biggest fear would be a flat out "transfer die" counterfeit...

I was just thinking the other day - "I haven't searched the SLQ auctions lately" - and went on about my business and never even logged in over the weekend.

Congrats on another great find - even if it ends up being a FR-01 - you should double your money.

Honestly, with all the low ball key collectors, an FR01 that is identifiable maybe worth more than "book" values. If it is a 1916, and you get it slabbed, and it comes back FR01, I would seek out people trying to make Low ball sets, they often will pay more than the FR01 price.i think the FR01 price is more speculation than what it is actually selling for. I imagine there aren't a lot of FR01 specimens of coins out there.

Though with how distinct the characteristics are with this one, there may be no shortage. I honestly don't know. LOL
