I have a ton of coin-related research PDF files I'd like to be able to read/highlight/carry around and read anywhere without having to break the laptop out every time - or read on a teeny screen. Anyone know how well the Kindle works? Nice and light? Easy highlighting/note taking? Are the notes you make searchable? How does it do formatting PDFs for the screen that contain a bunch of little pictures?

Suggestions for alternatives are welcome as well. I'm just looking for something more portable (and lighter) that I can still make notes in for later.

thanks

In my humble opinion an Ipad is what you need. One of the members of our coin club brought one to the meeting last month and he had a massive amount of info and hundreds of photo images of his coins on it. (One thing he had was a PCGS photo grading program that was really nice!) It is about the same size as my kindle but has 10 times the features.

Let me echo jfransch's comment. My iPad is light, portable, loaded up with the Krause catalogs, a searchable pdf reader app and the PCGS photo grade app. Works great for transporting images as well.

Yea, at this point if you want something like that the iPad is the way to go. The only down side is it costs more, but you get WAYYYY more out of it.

Only reason I dont have one is I just bought the new iPhone.

Never thought about an iPad.. how slow is it with the Krause catalogs? They're huge.. if it's ok with those, it would probably handle anything else I throw at it.

Are you able to read on the iPad outside without squinting to death?

I just use my Droid, but that is probably not what you are looking for (because of the screen size).

I agree with the iPad because you have more options with it than with the Kindle. As for being daylight readable, I cannot answer that from experience. But when I compare my iPod touch to my Droid, I have to say the iPod is slightly easier to read in direct sunlight.

Xshift-- I've taken my iPad with me all over, but I hardly ever find myself trying to work with it outside. There probably would be some squinting involved there, but I'm not sure.
When looking through the available apps for working with pdfs on it I was very concerned about the question of speed you raise. I wound up trying a couple of different apps before settling on the one I currently use; I was led to try this app because user feedback had pointed out that it handles oversized pdfs really well, and I couldn't agree more. If you are in Germany (Weimar), for instance, and you want to go to Zimbabwe, it literally takes half a second to get there (the app gives you the country index as an easily navigable menu). My usual consultation pages are bookmarked, which gets me there even faster. It would take me longer to find the page if I had the hard copy in my hands. And of course you can zoom in and out of pages with two fingers, as you would on your ipod/touch/iphone. The one thing that can be a bit slow is searching, but that may be more due to the fact that you're looking for a word or two in 2250 pages of searchable text... (Krause 1901-2000 cat).

The thing I've become most excited about lately is the VGA output cable they sell for it, which will allow me to use it for many work-related tasks.

Thanks, guys.. I may need to take one for a test drive. They're definitely on the pricey side.. but maybe I can write it off as a business expense Thanks for the details on working with PDFs, too, Serious.
