Morgan dollars seem to be inundated with eye spikes, while Peace dollars share this tendency with eagle shoulder spikes. Are there reasons for the apparent prevalence in each, or are these just coincidences? I cannot for the life of me understand just why this seems to be. Does anyone have a clue? Another question for those who have seen many Morgans: I have heard of and seen poor photos of impaled eagle, drooling eagle, etc. Are these things purported to actually be die gouges or are they accepted as just PMD?

I can't really address the Morgan eye spikes; perhaps it's just a weak area although that doesn't make much sense. It might be a more abrupt transition from the field than, for instance, the neck/field junction. The Peace dollar shoulder spikes are clashes.

Thanks Dave, I did notice that there was stark contrast between the boldness of the two. The thought had just occurred to me that possibly there may have been a working hub defect that was attempted to remove on the the individual dies, and gouges resulted. That probably doesn't make much sense either though.
Clash marks....I kinda like that....but from what though? The back of Liberty's neck?
I do rather doubt that was the case on the Morgan, given its location in a device.

IIRC the Peace dollar clash is from the lowest of the hair. I've always been curious about the eye spikes. It's a very odd place to expect die damage; there's no apparent area of weakness. Especially not compared, for instance, to the minute details in "In God We Trust."

Quote:IIRC the Peace dollar clash is from the lowest of the hair. I've no idea what IIRC means Dave, but I rather doubt that you are the one that cooked up that notion. It may be factual, but I just don't see it without about a 30 degree rotation. I think that there are known rotations on some coins of the 1923 type. Are these the same varieties that display the shoulder spikes? Or are they maybe ESD of the spiked varieties? I am having great difficulty swallowing the clash thing as the spikes seem to be rather common on '23-S as well, and I have not heard of a rotated '23-S.

The clash on the Eagles shoulder is from Lady Liberty's neck (the back of her neck by TRVST) not the hair. Check out the Attribution 101 for Peace dollars on the VAMworld.com site. The direct link can be found here --> http://www.vamworld.com/Peace+VAM+Attribution+101 Though the Shoulder clashes are common enough, only Peace dollars with 2 or more shoulder clashes are listable according to Leroy. My first discovery (1925-s VAM-3A) was such a coin and a TOP50 to boot. Unlike Morgan dollars where reverse letter clashing is raised and obverse is incused, on Peace dollars clashing is incused on both sides.

The 1887-P "impaled eagle's wing", I have a few, a simple die gouge happened just on the lower left wing, closest to the eagle's body, like a very small spear, very small, but REAL....
