I just checked my order status on a 1861 quarter eagle I bought on ebay that I had sent out to anacs. It states in the grade box N9 which I read as questionable authenticity, altered coin. I will post pics of it when I get it back, but my question at the moment is do they tell you their reasoning for an n9?

Thanks,
XoG

Was it an 1861-S? Maybe ANACS thought it was an added S.

TPG normally don't call out a coin as counterfeit to avoid legal hassles. Questionable Authenticity is a politically correct way to say fake. Altered is another matter. Please fill us in when you can.

You should be able to get a refund through eBay/PayPal. It is a very good copy. ANACS said it was die struck and from the looks of it, it's likely got a high gold content also.

I would contact the seller first. If that doesn't help contact ebay/paypal or whoever. Just be prepared to prove its the same coin though

The exact wording on the packing slip states-
Coin-Comments:Not Genuine. Struck Copy.
As you can see from the pics in the ebay listing above the words copy cannot be found anywhere on the coin.

if you have a heritage account you should check out this one graded by NGC. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...o=1332#Photo the reverse is different than yours. Not sure if they had 2 reverses in 1861 or not.

What it probably is is one of the counterfeits struck in the Middle East back in the 1950's and 1960's. There were a LOT of them made.

Having the photos from the auction will help since it has distinctive marks.
