For anyone who has ever looked for 3CN by date, you'll know that certain dates shouldn't be difficult to locate by any indications of mintage figures and pricing. But, let me tell you, there are some real sleepers out there. 1875 is a TOUGH date, especially in better circulated condition, and very scarce with a decent strike. You almost never find this date in dealer inventories. I find about 2-3 up for sale on ebay per week (and most of these I find are problem coins)...at most...sometimes zero. The strike on this coin is just about as good as it comes for this date. This was a sweet find but I also paid what I consider high retail (usually 3CN are available for not much above wholesale except for semi-key/rare dates). Edited by Prethen 08/02/2006 9:00 pm

$83 (shipped) For a scarce coin that's not high at all. But, for a coin that's not priced as a scarce 3CN, it was priced higher than you might normally find it.

I recently bought a 1873 in EF condition. Its obverse details are less than yours, reverse is better.

Nice purchase. I've found the same problem with the 1891 Seated Half. It shouldn't be difficult to find, but it is.
Is that possible doubling that I see at the date?

1873 tends to have a somewhat better strike so I'm not surprised that the reverse has better details. Is it an Open or Closed "3"? Can you show us pictures/scans?

Ohmygosh....I didn't notice that! I'll have to dig the coin out and take a close look. Thanks for pointing that out. It might be a visual aberration due to the scan. Doubling was not uncommon, so I won't be totally surprised, but that would be a pleasant surprise, nonetheless! I'll let you know. Bruce

Where'd you get the coin off of? I'm might get into those 3 cent coins if the price is right. How much would a commom date one in around XF run? Thanks for the info.

Off the top of my head, a common XF should run you about 40 bucks, maybe less, maybe a bit more. I got that one from CopperDollar.com. It was my first purchase from them. However, you can get 3CN from most major dealers.

Thanks for the info. I'll check my dealer first, then go to the internet.

You can get some 3 cent coins for about 20- 25 bucks in G4 on ebay. Maybe to low of a grade? I think they are very cool
