I'm just getting into coins and I love silver. I have plenty of US coins already, and I'd like to grab a few foreign coins. What countries do you think have the most interesting silver coins? |

i havent seen many other silver coins from other countries, but germany's were nice and I like indias as well.

Most all countries issued silver coins at some point, even if only commems for many of the newer countries. There are attractive silver designs of all kinds out there and for every taste; short of browsing the Krause catalogs for designs you like, you might pick a part of the world and look at the silver issues of each country in that region. Just a thought!
I tend to gravitate towards European 19th and early 20th centuries--for various reasons--, but one tends to come across the unexpected at shows and some shops. Recently I found a small Saudi Arabian silver piece that was just exquisite at a show, had to buy it!

Old or new? What price range? Crowns or smaller? There are lots of attractive silver coins out there. Could you be more specific?

I think Canada offers more in new silver coins than any other country. After that, the "old world" would probably the most interesting to collect if you love world history. Be careful with Chinese products, a lot of counterfeits out there.

Personally I started with US. Then I got into the foreign silver coins that circulated in the US before 1857 which had legal tender status. They are a subset of US collecting in my opinion since they are what the average Joe used for money before 1857. From there I went on to counterfeits of those same coins.
But I would collect whatever interests you. You are the only one who can decide that.
Modern coins are best for a limited budget. Older silver usually comes at a premium.
I also caution buying ANYTHING from China or from someone in the US with a Chinese sounding name. The number of forgeries is staggering.
Before buying it may be best to ask the Forum or one of the specialists who writes here.

For me, it would be coins from the South African Republic (Dutch: Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, or ZAR).

From what I've seen (in slightly this order): Poland, Mexico, Russia (USSR), Peru, USA, and yeah maybe Canada :P I have no preference..

I guess I'll do it manually: @ unnkown95 I've seen the German coins, very cool, India's are awesome too! @SeriousCERES I like middle eastern coins as well, just got a 1959 Iraq 50 Fils, love it! @3stooges old or new, looking to spend right around silver price if possible, not really looking for any rare coins with numismatic value. @carmykle Thanks for the heads up! @swamperbob I started with US as well, I have most of the different kinds of silver US coins. Its understandable that most older silver coins are fairly expensive. However I was at my local coin shop and they have a bin of foreign coins that are all only 10% above their silver value, not too bad of a deal! I got some awesome coins like a 1953 Morrocan 100 Francs, 1958 Japanese 100 Yen, and a 1957 Nederland 1 G to name a few. Thanks for the info! @patersc indeed, I also got a 1929 Great Britain One Shilling for 10% over melt value. awesome lookin coin! @kena so many countries! so many coins! @Libertad I need to get some polish coins to honor my heritage! @ianmprice French are always looking interesting! |

I am an ancient collector. Coins that have significant historical connection are always interesting.
I have a tetradrachm of Athens with the features well known to collectors of ancient Greek coins.
It has an owl on the reverse, which was the city symbol or badge, if you like of the city, and the head of Athena, the goddess of the City on the obverse. struck about 430 BC. The first strikings of these coins, in about 480 BC, commemorated the two battles which saved the Greeks from invasion by the Persians. The silver for these coins was mined in place known as Larium, to the west of the city. The presence of these mines help to explain the prosperity of the City.
The two battles are famous; the Battle of Marathon, where the Olympic long distance running event gets it's name from, and the Battle of Salamis. This was a sea battle. These two battles resulted in the victorious Greeks being able to kick the Persians out of their homelands.
