Here's a close-up picture of a coin I'm considering buying. The coin is slabbed MS 63 Brn by NGC. I see the spots around the date and a few on other parts of the obverse. What are these and what is the chance they will get worse?

Hi, these are simply toning spots on the coin as the surface has reacted to the environment over the years. The surface of the silver reacts to the air around it and produces oxidation. Perhaps the coin was sneezed on long ago! Nothing really to worry about.

Coin is not silver, but I agree the copper reacted with the air. Those look like carbon spots.

At least its graded so I wouldn't worry about the spots too much, NGC didn't.

just initially worried that the spotting appeared after NGC got to it. But it seems like they aren't much to worry about anyway.

Not sure about others but if it was me purchasing that coin, I'd pass. Any coin graded that high with those spots makes me leary of the future of that coin. I'd even wonder if there is an air leak or if it was tampered with. Maybe a little pessimistic but an MS coin to me should look MS.

Ah. I'm glad someone "spotted" my deliberate mistake, if you'll forgive the pun.

I'm with you Just Carl; I decided to take a pass on it. It actually went for much more than I would have paid anyway, which is fine too.
