I have several old .50s that are in envelopes from 20 years ago. I assume they came this way from purchase or were graded back then by a coin shop.

Many are market as XF etc. and the grading info in the RedBook I bought don't show this grade. Is there a cross over to what is shown in the Red Book?

Thanks,
Darryl

XF (Extra Fine) could be EF in your Red Book (not sure which they use, as I don't have it with me).

The Red Book equivalent of XF is EF-40.

Darryl, XF and EF are the same thing. XF grades usually are referred to as XF-40 or XF-45. you might want to also pick up a copy of the ANA (American Numismatic Association) Grading standards book. I have that one as well as the Coin Values paperback showing pictures of verious coins and their various grades, and I also have a copy of "Photograde". These reference books will give you some great insight and help you with your own grading. Who knows, maybe some of the halves you picked up aren't really XF, but maybe AU. And there may be some better dates. Woo hoo!!

Are your coins dated 1964 or earlier or are they all clad Kennedy's (1971 to date). Don't forget that the 1965-70 Kennedy's are 40% silver.

Half Dollars that are 1964 and earlier are 90% silver (as you might know) so either hold on to them or make sure you get a good price for them from a dealer. My $.02

My plan is to determine the value of the most valuable coins I have and then to advertise them for sale on Craig's List. The advantage being that it is free and localized. I live in Sedona, AZ. which is 25 miles south of Flagstaff and 125 miles north of Phoenix. I will advertise them in Phoenix because of the larger audience. Also as you can see from the sample pictures I have posted on this site, I don't have high dollar camera equipment to post GOOD pictures. I would rather have a buyer close enough to come inspect the coins personally so there is no doubt as to what I am selling. I don't want to unintentionally take advantage of anyone.

I will probably sell many of the coins in large lots for current silver market even though there will be many coins worth more than that in the lots. For me it reaches a point of deminishing return on my time invested for selling the individual coins seperately with the marketing time and cost involved.

I know the members of this site are collectors and don't like to see ANY of these old coins melted. I can respect that as I am an old car collector and feel the same about them to a certain degree. Hopefully some of you will get a good deal from me.

I wish that this site did not have a 250 post limit on advertising coins for sale or I would be putting some up now. I don't understand this rule as I feel it cheats the members from getting first rights from people like me that have a cashe' of old coins to sell and sellers like me will find another sales venue long before we ever reach the post count requirements. I know this is more of an enthuesiest site and there are a lot of scammers out there trolling sites like this and that may be part of the reason for the rule. I suppose the for sale section is more of bonus for the long time members but at the same time it cheats the ones that want to buy from people like me.

Thanks for all the help so far, I am sure I will need more.
