Someone had sent a link to a question I had and I looked at the 1878-1921 Morgans on here:

http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/Morgan/Grades

Now, the MS60 looks worse than the AU58 to me. Can someone explain why the one on the right (MS60) is graded higher? I do see more detail but it also looks like there are more scratches. I'm so confused. I have some ungraded Morgans and want to be accurate if I decide to sell them.

Please help! Thanks!!

It is strange and one can only presume that there is no trace a wear on the 60. Once a coin is "circulated" and wear is detected it'll never be an Unc. The 60 in the photograde looks like bab marks and die problems. IMHO

The 60 is uncirculated and the 58 is not.

You've stumbled upon a key point here though. AU55 and AU58 coins are often more attractive than MS60 and MS61 coins. Many collectors pursue high AU coins for this very reason. The are usually much less expensive than MS63 and MS64 coins of equivalent eye appeal.

Exactly, an AU58 is usually, in my opinion, a much nicer coin to look at than a 60 or 61.

That's odd. Then why is MS60, etc even considered a higher grade than an AU58? Doesn't MS60, MS61, etc mean it is uncirculated?

spin em' right

You will see this a lot on Morgan dollars. When these coins were made they were stored and shipped in $1000.00 bags. Most stayed in the sealed bags for many years. The coins would rub together and the sharp reeded edges would cause nicks .. and rubs on many of the coins. These coins are still considered uncirculated.

When you see a nice, what is called slider AU coins (AU 55/58), it is determined that these coins have developed some slight wear once it has left the mint/mint bags.

So like the PCGS photograde site shows a MS-60 coins with a lot of bag marks/rubs it is technically a uncirculated coin. While the AU-58 was a much nicer looking (eye appeal) coin it will have one or two spots with wear but technically a circulated coin.

Goldrush nailed this one. I have folks ask about this ALL the time.
I have seen the Ugliest MS60 and MS61 coins... baggy, baggy, baggy. Looks like they've been drug through the parking lot, but technically they are Uncirculated.
So a nice looking AU, with some luster and just a touch of wear would be the coin for me, EVEN IF IT COSTS MORE. sorry for the yelling, but I really want to help.

Alot of coins have 64 detail, but with just a hint of rub so they are 58's. I've seen some people call the AU-64's or what ever the upper grade would be w/o the rub.
