anyone know what this coin is supposed to be? I have a friend who only wants to identify what it is. we both agree that it appears to be a cast copy, but don't know of what. If it does appear to be genuine, please let me know as well, thanks!

It certainly looks like a cast copy from the picture on the screen, however I like to have suspect coins sitting in the palm of my hand before I will venture an opinion with fewer reservations, and even then as I have done with all suspect coins, take it to a few different professionals to strengthen my own opinion.

I collect ancients, and that is the way I normally operate with suspect coins.

I agree that from the pic it's cast-looking - I really don't like the way the rim on the reverse lifts up; I've only ever seen that effect on cast fakes. The silvering also seems to be peeling off the reverse on the rim at 8 o'clock.

As for what it's supposed to be, I'm stumped. The critter on the reverse looks for all the world like a vomiting dog; that's not something Greeks or Romans would normally depict on coins! There seems to be some kind of script in the reverse exergue, but it's not clear enough to tell whether it's Greek, Latin, Phoenician or something else.

I must admit, Sap, I did not recognise the reverse, and I have seen quite a few ancients in my time! Vomiting dog? T.L.A.R. That Looks About Right

I agree with the coin appearing to be a cast replica. I love the vomiting dog theory.

My first thought though was the Romulus/Remus legend. That would make it a wolf and a baby/babies, but I don't see the woodpecker anywhere.

I do not collect ancient coins - but I play a collector on TV. Seriously though - I really don't collect ancient coins, but I did have to do a research paper way back in the dark ages when I was in high school on the Roman Empire. One thing I seem to remember - but am by no means sure about - is that on Roman coins the emperor faces right, not left. If I am wrong, please correct me.

( I can't resist )

Maybe the dog ate the woodpecker? and with that, I am going to bed.

Well done, jedichef. That's it.

For the record (when the ebay auction expires), Here it is on Wildwinds: a silver nomos of the city of Velia, in the region of Lucania. The "vomiting dog" is supposed to be a "feeding lion". The reverse text is supposed to be the Greek name of the city, "UELETWN". I can sort of read it once I know what it's supposed to say.

I still think it's most likely a cast copy.

yes, I agree that it's probably a cast copy. the question always was, "of what?" now at least we know.
