First of all, welcome to our CC family! What type of error are you referring to? Here are the specs on the 1898 Liberty Head Eagle: Weight: 16.718g; composition .900 gold/100 copper (net weight: .48375 oz. pure gold); diameter: 27mm; reeded edge; minted in Philadelphia, CArson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.

IT IS AN ERROR COIN WITH 3 LETTERS MISSING FROM THE WORDS U.S.A. ON THE EAGLE on the reverse side and only 11 stars on the obverse. They're the 3letter:"I" of united, "A" of states, and "R" of america. It look just like this : http://www.adpost.com/us/collectibles/913Do you think this is a genuine error coin? coz my friend has something like this but a lot smaller than the description that you've given me.. Thanks for your time..

I fixed the links in your posts. I do not believe that this is an authentic coin. All of these coins should have 13 stars. The way that the stars are spaced on the coin in the link, it is not as though some just weren't struck. The spacing is wrong.

In addition, all of the information that the seller is providing is wrong. There were 812,130 1898 gold eagles minted. I also just noticed that he is selling this from Singapore. US coins being sold from China are usually counterfeit. I strongly recommend that you do not buy anything from this seller.

Click on the edit icon in your post and look at the format. All you need to do for a link is paste it in, highlight it, and then click on the globe icon at the top of the box.

This brings to mind- that anyone who is seriously interested in buying foreign gold (I mention this because of your mention of Singapore) If you have the means and are serious- I would suggest you try and get Friedberg's Standard catalog on Gold Coinages- It lists every countries gold coinage from 600 A.D. to 1958. They have been out of print for a while but onnce in a while one will show up at a book dealer bourse table at a coin show. I have had mine for over 45 years and what I like about it- is that it shows the gram weights on all issues. This is helpful due to the fact that most dealers now-a-days will show only partial ounce weight- So a bit of conversion is needed- put your math to work and you will see how far above melt some of these dealers are pricing their modern foreign. Collectibles are a different matter- but you still get the stats. Dewey Knight #28
