I am in the process of transferring my Indian Head cents from an old Whitman album to a nice new Dansco. My old album only had one hole for 1886 and the new Dansco has holes for two varieties. I was wondering if someone had a good photo or a link showing and explaining the difference in 1886 IHC variety 1 and variety 2?

Distinguishing this variety is easy without pictures: On var 1, the lowest feather points between I and C of "AMERICA". On var 2, it points between C and A. Or, simply compare the obverses of a pre 86 with a post 86 IHC.

Some idiots have tried to sell counterfeit 1877s with the var 2 reverse by mistake! Thank goodness most crooks aren't too smart!

I saw someone selling an 1868 on e-bay not that long ago with the last feather pointing between the C&A. The worst thing about it was the fact he had multiple bids! That's why it's so important to know the coins you're buying. The counterfeiters don't even have to work very hard to fool people.

albumcollector just click on the U.S. coin facts under the navigation links on the left side of this page. Then click on Indian cents under the small cents heading and you will see an example of an 1861 then scroll down and there's a picture of an 1887 and you'll see the differences described previously.
