Howdy folks!

So this Merc is interesting. I think my photography was far too kind - I wish I had that problem more often. There is actually quite dark tarnish on the highest points - leading edge of wing and aft wing feathers, and the blotch on the neck is actually quite brownish and pronounced in hand. I'm playing with the coin now, trying to figure out how I hot the light to hide all that... very strange; didn't mean to.

The reverse has similar brown blotchiness.

Don't get me wrong, this coin has a TON of luster. It is very pretty. But not as nice as the photographs.

Anyway, I kindly submit for your experience and discretion:

Nice 43 merc. I'll jump inwith an MS60-63 opinion. Some guys will dip such coins in a coin cleaner designed to remove tarnish and that will improve the appearance. Perhaps others can suggest a product. Anyway, with all of that brown stuff gone, you'll have a really nice coin. I didn't see anything that looked like rub or wear. MS60-63 will result in a coin valued around 15-20 bucks, IMO. Nice coin. all the mercs in MS are pretty.

In the photo's the discoloration has a greenish appearance, this could be PVC contamination.

you could give pure acetone and try if its PVC it will be gone in seconds if it remains as it is then its something inorganic and the solutions become more limited, a dip in MS-70 would more than likely remove whats there but that stuff is touchy a second too long and the luster is gone and so is the value of the coin.

GOOD POINT METALMAN!! Yes, I had completely forgotten about PVC. I have acetone, I'll definitely put this one in for a quick dip. At this point, it's about conserving the coin to keep the PVC from getting worse, not cleaning it to enhance value.

I wonder if verdi-care would work well here... I haven't done enough experimentation yet to know.

I would say it is AU-55 to AU-58 at best. The bottom bands are not fully split and that leads me to believe that there is a slight bit of rub. Yes, the middle bands are not split which is very common among mercs and is indicative of a weak strike. However, when the bottom bands are not split on a higher grade coin it can also mean that it has circulated for a little while. Besides, if I'm wrong and this is a mint state coin, it should be easy to find an example with fully split bottom (and middle) bands for the 3rd most common date in the series.

Please don't take my comments the wrong way. This is a nice coin. I just hope you didn't pay too much for it.
