Among the collection we recently
aquired, there are a dozen or so
of these chinese coins.
None are in holders, and was wondering
if they have a top/bottom/left & right
similar to other coins that these are
obvious.
Also,I understand alot of these turn
out to be fakes? Is there an easy way
tell if thats the case?
Thanks,
Ken

problem for awhile.

and scanned the reverse.

This is a machine-struck cash coin from Guangdong (Kwangtung) province, 1890-1908. Excessively common; it's safe to assume this one is genuine.

The four characters on Chinese "cash-style" coins (the ones with the square hole) are typically read in the following order: top, bottom, left, right. The two characters to the left and right are almost always the same on every coin (they mean "current coin"). The top and bottom characters are the "reign-name" of the emperor that issued it. This particular coin was struck during the rein of the Guang Xu (Kuang Hsu) emperor.

Fakes of Chinese cash coins are fairly common; especially since many dealers can't tell the difference easily and just toss fakes and fair dinkums together in their "Chinese coins" scratchtray. Many of the fakes are machine-struck like this coin is, though most genuine cash coins were cast. To imitate the "cast" appearance, many of the cheaper struck fakes have a synthetic "bubbly" surface, like this example.

Sap,
Thanks for all the info.
I'm sure none of the coins
in this collection will
be very rare,but there's something
about everyone of them.May sound
silly,but I can't help but wonder
what stories they could tell if only
they could talk.
By the way, there are quite a number
of examples from Australia ranging from
the 19teens through the 1960s.
As I become more familiar with all the
things this site has to offer(expert advice,
information,links,etc.)I'm sure I'm in for
a lot of fun.
Thanks again,
Ken
