What date is the coin? If it's after 1982 It's probably a trapped gas bubble.Starting in 1982 they made Cents out of copper plated zinc,we call them zincolns and they are notorious for plating problems.

Thanks John1, The coin is a 1985 D. Is this worth holding onto or should I toss it into a wishing well?

Pop the bubble then spend it. If you toss it into the well
it will just dirty the water after a while while it rots :)
