Actually Gene, since rusting did not really manifest itself as a perpetual problem, I rather doubt that it was high on the list of concerns. Like the Yenta implies, it may well have occurred here and there in freak instances, and like you say, I have little doubt but what each die was as unique in its creation as you or I. I consider that the primary focus of the mint was production numbers, not rust inhibition, and not quality. Quantity was job one in 1878 and 1921 for sure, corners were cut to save time, and a quality product suffered for it.

You know Gene, while a mystery is fun to try to solve, I wonder if we might be doing a disservice to ourselves as a side effect. Would pitting be as much fun to look at and wonder 'what is that?' as it might be to look at it and 'know' that it was definitely rust that caused it?

Conversely, what about scribbles? I know that they are detested by most folks, but isn't that just because they are misunderstood? If we knew 'why' they were there, would that make them any more lovable?

Hello all Zee, Gene, Seated and Dave.. Rust Pitts can be found on many US coins. About 4 months ago I posted a standing liberty that has a rust spot on the reverse.

Hey Gene! I was going too send a few things to LVA. Do you think I should send the 3 82 V-3's him? The 3 I have are early mid, mid and late die states the last one I think is a very late V-3a where the US is almost gone.

My only answer could only be.....WHY.....its not a dis-service to to anyone.......to ask..WHY..perhaps some would question why we ask? why would "I" not...
Does it diminish me to you who can not see to ask "WHY", and to ponder the perpondeorance of evidence to question why....and yet not ask?
IGNORANCE is to blindly accept the opinions of others with out question.. I am not without reason....or thought like many on this site...

Oooo thanks Russ, that is very interesting to know....I had wondered about the effect on other denominations. (I almost asked if it appeared on copper coins as well). I guess it is getting near bed time.....(yeah, that's the ticket)....... I am so very tired, I can't think rationally.

Gene I ask for a few reasons. First off I dream of clashed E's from time to time and a mind can do funny things sometimes. 2 your opinion I respect. And 3 is 2 heads are better then 1 and 3 is better than 2 most of the time. and the forth is I do not what too waste his time.

LVA hates Phantom (E's) I am to understand. And it is light but my picks are from 4 different angles.

Unless you can see the E with a 5X loop, it is doubtful Leroy will issue a new clashed E classification.

There are lots of criteria your coin must possess. Reference Alan Scott clashed E scorecard. That might help you.

Alan said that if it lined up it may be. I just do not have a clash guild. I have 3 different die states of the coin and it looks like the 3a was run a while after the US clash. I am also wondering it the die's on this VAM where hardened correctly. The die ware and over polish of the VAM 3's are something else.
