Some fella down the road from me has one for sale. He is sending me pics tomorrow morning. He says it has the name Samuel Waringe on it. He did know obv. from rev. It also says "HIS HALF PENNY" on it. He has had it since the late 60's when he received it from an uncle for a grad. gift. He suspects it has something to do with horses because it has someone riding one with a spear or sword in his hand. I dont think so. Ring a bell for anyone? So many 1/2's were made around that period, and I'm burnt-out searching. I have no books that are British, U.K. or whatever specific. He believes it is brass. Doesn't seem to be pulling my leg, just heard of me off of craigslist. He'll take it to Rosehill coins later this week if I pass on it. I just dont want to spend clear into next month kicking myself.

It is listed in Tokens Issued in the Seventeenth Century in England, Wales, and Ireland; by William Boyne on page 528 under Uncertain Tokens as his #34. From circumstantial evidence he believes it was issued in the town of Bury in the county of Lancashire in England.

The mid 1600's saw a huge number of tokens being issued in the British Isles due to a severe shortage of regal coinage. Most issues were of the farthing denomination issued by local merchants. There are literally thousands of varieties. The 1891 Boyne catalog is over 600 pages and the later revision and expansion of his work by George Williamson runs for over 1,500 pages (And these are NOT illustrated)

Unlike the Conder tokens of a century later, these are much rarer. No issue can really be called common because the mintages were much smaller and most have not survived. However, these do not have as wide a collector base as the Conder tokens do so even though any given token may be rare the number of collectors that want it are even rarer. I have purchased low grade pieces for as little as ten dollars. Nice condition pieces can go for $50 or more. Heart shaped tokens (yes they were issued that way) tend to be popular and will sell for noticeably more. If I was going to try and do some research on values I would probably go through the archives of DNW's past auctions (Dix Noonan and Webb) Unfortunately their archives are not very easy to search. You will have to do it auction by auction.
