Thought that I would have a little fun with one of my British coins. Here's a little quiz - no cheating! Sorry there's no prize, except a little knowledge gained. This coin represents 2-Firsts for a British Coin - What are they? It also represents one of the Last for a British Coin - What is that? Also, what year was it minted and why? Have fun!  |

It was the first time someone other than royalty was pictured on a British coin? Minted in 1965 to honor his appointment as prime minister?

We're getting there! 1965 - Correct. Winston Churchill was the first "Commonor" to be on a British Coin. That's one of the firsts. We have another First and one Last associated with this coin. (ps: I really didn't know this stuff - I looked it up ;-0 and I thought that these were interesting.) |

Found the reason why it was minted in 1965. That was the year he died, he was 90 and the coin was issued to commemorate his life and service to Britian.

Wasn't the Churchill Crown the last one of that denomination issued before the conversion to the new Decimal system?

Irishraider - correct, Churchill died in 1965 and thus, the coin. swamperbob - Close enough, it was the last 5 Shilling British Coin, although it is a Crown. So.....one more to go...give me a few minutes and I'll post a hint for the final 1st! Here's the Hint: Obverse  Edited by dsking

Have just read that there is 2 varieties in this coin, as well, on
the reverse side, the letter R.
Sorry nothing to do with the questions.

All good guesses gnome. This one is not quite so obvious and I think you have to really know British coins to know this one. I didn't know it until I looked it up either so that show's what I know. I don't think that it is a first necessarily for this particular coin though.
I didn't know about the "R" either. I know that Krause shows a circulated coin and a Specimen coin with a satin finish. (KM#910)

You're making some very interesting observations gnome. I'll answer the last first tomorrow. It's kind of an unfair first and it pertains to QEII herself.
We'll all just have to sleep on it for tonight! Everyone did very well. Like I said, I didn't know this stuff either!
