I'd like to get opinions on whether the following coin is a 1799:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1799-ONE-CENT-/...S_Individual

The position of the last two digits seem to match those of an authentic coin. Are there other characteristics elsewhere on the obverse or reverse that identifies the 1799? Thank you.

Run away from that auction as fast as you can

That line tells you all you need to know about the seller. The images posted are small and of poor quality, the sides are even cut off(hiding major rim ding?). I can see a 1 and a 7 but the rest is gobbledygook, it could very well be a $40 1798 coin. 1799 is the key date of the Draped Bust series and genuine examples sell for thousands of dollars. It is a very tough coin and if you are not an EACer then you should not be purchasing a raw example of this coin.

You buy it, send it to get certified, comes back a 1798....a 1799 in this low of a grade should only be bought certified. Very rare coin.

Does anyone know of characteristics, other than date, that are unique to a 1799 or, for that matter, a 1798?

The last digit looks like the top loop of an 8, stay away from this one.
