I cannot decide which way to go I was thinking of starting him out on Roosevelt dimes I am thinking the year of 1955 to start. any input from the seasoned veterans would be very helpful. I have to purchase the coins tomarrow.....nothing like a little procrastination

First to CCF. Does your son show any interest in any particular domination? May I suggest you start out putting together a birth year set for/with your son.

I've seen kids have fun at the bargain bins. Take them to one of those and I guarantee you they'll pick out some winners. You have tou give kids a good variety. Limit them and you're just making the choices for them. It's all about choice.

My oldest son is five and I can't get him to work on a set. His reason being that he 'already has that one'. Just because it has a different date doesn't mean anything to him at he moment. I take him to my local coin dealer, who gives him a box, and he sits on the floor going thorough the world coin bin for ages while I am doing whatever I need to at the store. He comes home with a bunch of coins that he puts into his album and we have both had a great time.

thank you for the suggestions and I will take him to the either the pawn shop or the coin shop and let him pick out the coins he wants. you are all right on about it being about choices for them and as time goes on he will figure out where his collection will go

my 5 year old is working on an Eisenhower collection. He really like the large size and it is inexpensive for me.

All children are different , I could not get my daughter interested in older U.S. coins to save my life. I picked up a can of about 200 foreign coins and she loved them !

My first suggestion is birth year set Proofs (silver and clad) mints sets...to start.
Then pick up a whitman or Dansco book for State Quarters, and a few rolls of quarters from the bank to search through
The quarters are great for educational purposes as well as a collctor value...and as something that the two of you can work on together.
My 7yr old daughter and I are sortingquarters now.

My 2 (almost 3) y/o granddaughter loves to sit and help me sort and examine coins. She's even getting better at putting them in 2x2s. I've been saving wheat pennies and nickels when for when she gets older and continues an interest, albeit with a better understanding of what she's looking at. I also have some older Whitman folders for her to start putting coins into. I have purchased mint and proof sets for her, and started buying Silver Eagles for her beginning with the year she was born, hoping to build her a set with one for each year I'm here.

On a lighter note, she loves to examine coins with a loupe. She puts the loupe to one eye, and the coin up to the other one. She gets a real serious look on her face when she does this. Funny as heck.

I was at the pawn shop todaY AND ASKED ABOUT THE CALDRON OF COINS ON THE COUNTER. HE SAID 7 BUCKS A POUND SO I WILL PROLLY TAKE HIM IN THERE AND LET HIM PICK OUT WHAT HE WANTS

Young Kids go by what appeals to them, not what's worth the most.
