Hi. I'm going through some old coins I acquired a while ago (not a serious collector), and I came across a coin I can't id. It looks just like an 1864 2 cent piece on one side, but the other side does not have a denomination. Instead, it has what looks like the letters M and C intertwined in a design. Any ideas of what this could be?
This is my first post and I have trouble posting good pics of coins, but I'm really stumped! I tried to post a pic, but not sure if and how well it worked.

I know it's hard to see, but it looks like a fancy large "M" with what looks like a very flattened "C" or some other symbol interlocking with it.

Thanks for your response. I scanned the coin but am having a hard time getting the pdf to translate to a form I can post and be able to enlarge it enough. I took a couple of pics with the coin in my hand and am going to see if it works any better.

a 2 cent piece with the reverse sanded down and then counter stamped.

maybe worth a buck or to.

Wow, that's strange! So the 2 cent denomination side was probably sanded down then stamped?
Who would do something like that? Thanks for your response.

I think this is a love token, or atleast that is what I understand about them. I don't know if this was done a really long time ago or later but I see a lot that look like that.

Yes, I know-that's why I was so confused! I almost couldn't even figure out it was
a 2 cent coin. I don't even know what to call it! A counterstamped 1864 2 cent
coin? It's like some strange hybrid!

sorry, didn't read you post, forgot to refresh.

I'm not sure why someone would do this, I would think to spread business, but it must have been stamped when 2 cent pieces were in normal circulation, because this could possibly be a rare variety.

ahhh! keep forgetting to refresh!

i don't think this would be called a hybrid (or mule) because it does not have 2 different COIN patterns.

but I guess it could be called a hybrid

I did a search on ebay for love token and I see some similar coins. Not the
exact item, but along the same idea. Interesting...

It is a love token and there are collectors for such. It looks like vintage artwork to me.
Check out this site, http://www.kenbarr.com/lovetokens.html
I bet you could connect with these people for a value. Good ( better ) work on your pictures. I like your token!

Vintage love tokens were hand engraved, not stamped or struck. The ornateness of the engraving can play a large role in the value.
