Hi

I saw the above gold coin on ebay and wanted to know what it was worth? It is uncirculated.

Thanks.

At bare minimum it'd be worth melt value of $241 but it is worth more for being graded and being a rarer coin. I don't have my books at the moment for some pricing.

A coin is not usually worth more for being graded unless one sells in the States, at least there is no premium for grading in Europe. Many buyers over here simply destroy any slabs they get hold of and place the coins in more convenient holders.

I am not sure how Australians regard these gradings. Perhaps Sap kan enlighten us?

As for value of the coin $800 is too much by far. I wouldn't think of buying at that price.

I only have a 2004 edition of the 19th century catalogue. Back then, gold was $400/oz, and this coin was valued at $120 in Unc, or about $50 above bullion value. Assuming the numismatic premium is the same, you're looking at a $300 coin there.

There is a scarcer variety of this coin, the 1879/7 overdate, which might be worth close to $800 in that condition... but if this coin was one of those, I think PCGS would have said so on the slab.

Australia is only just starting to debate whether American TPGs are good for us or not; only a small (but vocal) minority of Internet-savvy collectors are in favour of them. The vast majority of collectors in this country have never seen a slabbed coin. I've only ever seen a couple of dozen slabs from reputable TPGs, and they're usually mixed up with slabs from basement-slabbers like NNC on dealer's shelves.

I personally wouldn't pay more for a slabbed coin. And if I actually wanted the coin as a coin, rather than as an example of what some crazy people do to their coins, I'd crack it out as soon as I bought it.
