Hello,
What are you supposed to be looking at on the obverse to know if its a 1 or 2? I thought it was the chin. But know I am thinking the nose?
Thanks
BTW: Pictures would be extremely helpful. Edited by Canadian-Banknotes 08/29/2010 02:24 am

You can be fooled by looking only at the chin. As the working dies wore down, the chin/throat smoothed out so that will appear nearly rounded like a #1. The only way to tell is look at the tip of the crown. If the crown tip impinges at all on the bead, it is a #2. All number 1's will have a perfectly round bead. A #1 also will have the neck truncation pointed, and ending directly at/above the bead that is directly above the C in Canada... a #2 will have the truncation to the left of the bead. Most #1's also will have a small D/C at 6:00 (or close) on the Obverse, and sometimes on the reverse as well. Forget about the nose!

Rats! ... I forgot another great marker when I posted above. On ALL Obv 1's, the right half of the left foot of the N in Rina is always longer. The vertical leg of the left leg bisects the serif unevenly, leaving more to the right than the left.

OK, Thanks.
Sorry, this is a little off topic. But what do you think the grade of that coin is? F-12?

Today is my first day trying to guess grades. So this is not worth much... I think it is a little less that F-12 but I'm not sure what it is called. F-10?

It is an obverse #2 and I think Fine-12 is close. Here's a obverse #1 look at the N in Regina

Cdn-Banknote. If you look at any 1876 large cent, look at the tip of the crown where it almost touches the bead. Then look at the 1876 neck truncation where it comes to a point right at the bead directly above the C in Canada. Then look at the N in papeldog's photo. Compare any 1876 coin, which is Obv 1, to your coin and there is a world of difference. Papeldog's photo, while dark, shows what an Obv 1 1884 should look like with the N in regina.(bottom left foot longer on the right).

Hi guys. Just wanted to say thanks. I was looking up 1884 cent varieties and came across this forum. I through it I found out that my 1884 is the Obv 1 as the "N in regina.(bottom left foot longer on the right)." Which mine is but its not so evident in the picture. I'm going to send it to PCGS for grading and conformation. Thanks, Hus
