OK here is the deal. I bought a lot of 20 Australian 1/2 pennies and pennies a few months ago and have gotten around to getting them ready to go into my world coin collection. As I was sorting them I noticed some notations written on the 2x2's they came in. The notations are as follows.

1964 1/2 penny with FD

1960 1/2 penny with FD

1920 1 penny no pots (this could be no dots maybe?)

1949 1 penny IND DROP

1952 1 penny IND DROR (could be IND DROP)

So here is the question. What do these notes mean? I can take some pics and post them later if that would help. Thanks guys.

With FD means it has the letters FD on it I assume, which stands for Fidei Defensor or defender of the faith. I am not near my references right now but this appeared on all Australian pre decimal coins with the exception of the years 1953 and 54 (I think those were the two years). The IND stands for India which stopped appearing on Australian coins from 1948 onwards when India gained it's independence from the British Empire. I am not sure why the notes would say what they do because ALL half pennies in 1960 and 1964 had the FD and ALL pennies in 1949 and 1952 has the IND dropped form them. And the 1920 penny is exactly that, no dots.

Hope that helps.

fd could = Full Diamond , in kg crown band, same as counting pearls for grading.
no dot= 1919 no mmark penny minted in either melb/syd/perth.
dots are used above and below the scrolls on most pennys as mmarks.

Fidei Defensor is one of the Monarch's titles that go back to Henry V111.

In the early part of his reign 'ole 'enry was an energetic young man and a good (politically) Christian who was highly regarded by the Church of Rome. The Pope awarded him the title of 'Defender of the Faith'.

He had dreadful disagreements with the Church of Rome later on, when he wanted a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon, who was a good Spanish Lady who was also highly regarded by the Church of Rome.

The Church of Rome vehemently disagreed with what 'ole 'enry wanted, and refused to annul the marriage. 'Ole 'enry then divorced the English branch of the Church from the Church of Rome, and set up the Church of England as a state Church, so the Pope's rulings no longer applied to him. The State church was known as an established church, that is, one sponsored by the State.

He went ahead with the divorce, and married Anne Boleyn, who became the mother of Edward V1. She later had her head chopped off. 'Ole 'enry went on to have six wives, and some of them also met a sticky end. In his later years, he was really a selfish and cruel tyrant. He possibly suffered from syphilis later in life.

He was known as 'Old Copper Nose' for his seriously debased silver coinage, because on his facing portrait, the tip of his nose wore through, revealing the copper rich alloy underneath.

Interestingly, the title 'Defender of the Faith' was an inherited one and has been carried on by all monarchs to this present day. Hence 'Fidei Defensor' - or F.D.

And now for the word of the week:

Antidisestablishmentarianism: The political movement to resist the Church from not being an established Church.

There's no diamonds on pennies or half pennies after 1936 so sorry, it's not short for full diamond or whatever.

Sel: quote "He [Henry V111] went ahead with the divorce, and married Anne Boleyn, who became the mother of Edward V1."
Anne became mother of Elizabeth, who much later became Queen after Edward, and then Mary.
Edward was the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour.

Tim: I agree with Mark's suggestions.
