For what it is worth, he got his name from Kelvin Martin, the original 50 Cent.

Although, I would like to think he keeps a Kennedy half dollar pocket piece.

I actually heard a much heftier and more juicy story on this (and that's why I remember it). Not sure how much is true, but there might be a connection between your and my story.

Anyway, for what I heard is that he had a half dollar piece, apparently as a pendant on a chain around his neck (might be because of Kelvin Marin references, I don't know that) and he got shot (So far it's a likely story when it comes to gangsta rappers, I'd say). Instead of killing him, the shooter hit the coin. Which is why the guy still lives and as a dedication to this miracle, he changed his stage name to 50 Cent.

I cannot find any credible source for that story. He has been shot a few times, but no recorded account of his shootings indicates his being saved in such a manner. I would assume this story is an urban legend.

That's fine with me. Urban legends can be quite nice. :)

They are fun to read and then either confirm or debunk. My other hobby is reading Snopes.
