I wasn't around the last time this thread was active, so let me just add a song my father used to sing to me when I was a kid:
I've got sixpence Jolly, jolly sixpence I've got sixpence To last me all my life.
I've got tuppence to spend And tuppence to lend And tuppence to send home to my wife (poor wife)!
No cares have I to grieve me No pretty little girl to deceive me I'm as happy as a lark, believe me As we go rolling, rolling home.
Rolling home, rolling home By the light of the silvery moon Happy as the day that we line up for our pay As we go rolling, rolling home.
The second verse is same as the first, except that it's I've got four pence" and the division of money is "tuppence to spend and tuppence to lend and no pence to send home to my wife (poor wife)." Next verse is "I've got tuppence" and the final verse is "I've got no pence."
You can throw a silver dollar down upon the ground, And it will roll, because it's round. A woman never knows what a good man she's got, Until she turns him down,
A man without a woman is like a ship without a sail, A boat without a rudder or a fish without a tail, A man without a woman is like a wreck upon the sand, There's only one thing worse in the universe That's a woman without a man. A woman without a man.
You can throw a silver dollar down upon the ground, And it will roll, because it's round. A woman never knows what a good man she's got, Until she turns him down,
So listen, my honey, listen to me I want you to understand That as a SILVER DOLLAR goes from hand to hand A woman goes from man to man, A woman goes from man to man.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved
This one is a classic - and it actually inspired one of our smilies! (Only quoting a short snippet, because around it the lyrics get even more freaky.)
Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring Banana phone! Boop-boo-ba-doo-ba-doop! Ping pong ping pong ping pong ping Po-nana phone! It's no baloney, it ain't a phony - My cellular, bananular phone!
Don't need quarters, don't need dimes, to call a friend of mine! Don't need computer or TV, to have a real good time! I'll call for pizza, I'll call my cat, I'll call the white house, have a chat! I'll place a call around the world, operator, get me Beijing-jing-jing-jing!
...Incidentally, I've checked the lyrics on three different websites, and got three (subtly) different versions. So I decided to make my own sorry. (If you now can't get this song out of your head... also sorry.)
Here's forty shillings on the drum To those who volunteer to come, To 'list and fight the foe today Over the Hills and far away.
Bottom dollar
Bottom dollar, it looks like the end, oh how I hate to see you go Bottom dollar, we've been the best of friends We musta counted on each other a hundred times or more Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye
Bottom dollar, all your friends have gone They've been blown on dance hall girls and wine Bottom dollar, if the truth was known You've been the bestest friend I'll ever find Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye
Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye Goodbye bottom dollar goodbye Old friend of mine
Probably no Dutch song mentioned, but Tante Julia by Boudewijn de Groot makes reference to a coin:
'Dus in het kerkenzakje deed ik braaf m'n kleverige cent.'
Which translates to something like 'So I voluntarily put my sticky cent in the church donation bag'.
Just for the record, in The Netherlands it's common to collect money at the end of a church service, usually via a bag at the exit. The Dutch cent hadn't been in use for decades until it saw a semi-revival with the Euro. Dutch 1 and 2 Euro-cent coins are nowadays only minted in limited numbers for use in sets. As this song is from the 1970's and tells about the youth of the artist, the cent was very much alive back then. :)
