The first coin that I obtained was a George 1V shilling of 1826, in about VF condition.

It was found in a cash box, that used to be stored in a large safe.

The key to the safe had been lost, and my dad was asked to pick the lock. He was able to successfully pick the lock after perhaps 10 minutes or so, and the cash box was opened, where the said coin was discovered.

I was standing near him at the time, and I tried to figure out how he managed to pick the lock. He refused to tell me! Boo! I still have the coin. That was about 50 years ago. Dad's secret died with him!

My first "coin" was a shaquille o'neal draft pick silver round.

My first real coins (after the silver round) were a book of common date IHCs.

My "first coin" was a JFK half given to me by a friend of my fathers. Can't remember the date or if it was 40% or 90% or it's grade. This would have taken place in '70-'71.

My first coins were half a dozen brass or aluminium-bronze coins - British threepences, French 20 centimes, that sort of thing - I'd picked out of a coin dealer's "foreign stuff" scratchtray at a coin and stamp show in 1980 or thereabouts, when I was eight years old. My first coin collecting lesson: just because a coin is "golden-coloured" doesn't mean it's actually made of gold.

Did you mean FIRST COIN FOR COLLECTING? Many kids are handed coins and it would be really tuff to remember a coin handed to you when you were about 3 or 4 years old.
Mine was a coin handed to me by Julius Ceasar. However, I wasn't allowed to keep it since he wanted it back because it had his face on it. OH, I take that back. It was Alexander the great, maybe.
I think this has come up several times in the past. Usually associated with who got you started on coin collecting. Mine was a 1943 Lincoln Cent from my Dad in 1943.

My childhood paper route began my coin collecting journey.

And my first lesson was similar to SAP's. I rec'd a 1986 Mexican $100 peso coin from someone on my route. (I guess they did not have enough quarters and thought I would not notice)

I saw the golden color and the $100, and thought the fool just handed me a 100 dollar gold coin.

After a couple of days of day dreaming about what I was going to buy with my $100, my parents broke the news that $100 pesos were not worth much.

I still have it....and atleast it is worth a little more than a quarter today.

A good topic! It has been a while since this one has come up.

For some history, here are two previous threads...

What was the first "real" coin that you acquired?
What was your first and last coin collected

Since they are archived, you cannot reply to them, so add your comments here.

For the record, my answer has not changed.

My first was an 1861 Indian Head cent which I found digging Matchbox roads in my hilly front yard.

I was about 8 years old. I have no clue where that coin went, but more than 40 years later I can still picture it clearly in my mind. It was about VF.

My first coin(S) were three gold German 10 Mark coins given to me by my grandmother in the early 1960's. Wish I had kept them.

Mine was a bicentennial Eisenhower dollar, courtesy of the Tooth Fairy.

I may still have it, I'm not sure....I've got a few bicentennial Eisenhowers now.

The first coin I remember was an 1858 Flying Eagle cent that my father gave me. I am still pretty fond of Flying Eagle cents today.

A friend of mine got me into collecting back in 2000. Shame on him, LOL. I want to say my first real coin purchase was a PCGS 1991 Roosevelt Silver dime in PR69DCAM. I bought the coin at a local coin show. I later sold that coin to the friend who got me into collecting. He still has it.

My first coin in the 70s, was a 1903 Morgan dollar, MS63 grade, given by my father whose birthday was 1903, thus the 1903 Morgan, he got it on his Hawaii trip in the 60s. Flash forward to 1988, my sister saw it and without much further ado, had it melted down to become a nice silver ring...ouch! I knew for sure that jeweler just gave her raw silver, and wouldnt melt a very good coin, but then it's forever lost, short forward to 1992 and my sister replaced it with another Morgan same 1903 lower grade but still nice looking, all is then ok
