There seems to be quite a few coins on ebay that look like they have been cleaned. When asked, one seller said their's were polished. How much does this take away from the book value? For the most part I'm talking about large Canadian cents. Thanks.

it depends on the term polished. If it was buffed by them to "shine it up" then for most coins renders them worthless. For keys and the likes they will still be worth something but significantly less.
If they are referring to polish lines aka die file lines that is normal lingo and does not affect price. I assume this is probably NOT what they are talking about.

the same as if they were cleaned, in my opinion.

If I was to buy a cleaned coin (which I likely won't ever do), I would likely reduce my buying price by 50% of what I would have paid if it was never cleaned/polished etc.

The coins were defintely 'buffed' so they look shiney and I have to admit they look darn nice. But relatively worthless is not what I'm looking for - thanks.

Unless it is a scarce or rare issue - stay away. (don't pay more than 50% trends)
