The coins probably came from a hoard multi decades ago. Such coins are professionally cleaned so they can be marketed, often to defray the costs of an archaeological research.
You could do little now to further improve their eye appeal, and if you did, you would disappoint yourself with the result.
Thanks for your advice, they'll remain as is. I find these ancients really fascinating.Purchased a small lot( ebay)last night, can't wait to see what arrives! Ken
