I made a post in the modern coin forum that, I received some new nickels today. I guess I should no by now this is where I should post to get some opinions on grade.

Here is a 1939 S nickel that I bought off E bay.

Please give some opinions on what grade you think it might be.

I'll take a shot at this subject to correction by the experts ...

The high points of the design show no signs of wear .... this would be Jefferson jaw, the ball of hair leading to the ponytail and the triangle above the dome of Monticello.

Sooo .... this is a MS coin ..... now ... the big debate ..... MS what?

I grade MS coins by the 'deduction' method ... taking points away for flaws .... adding point for visual appeal ....

There is a significant bag hit on Jefferson cheek ..... deduct points

Great luster and clean visual appeal .... add points

Multiple bag hits and scratches on the reverse .... deduct points

Weak strike (see the mushy steps and detail inside the memorial) ..... deduct points

Overall .... if I were the TPG with this lovely coin in hand and 8 seconds to render an opinion ...

MS65

Is it just mushy because it has the 38 reverse?

I agree with MS65. All of the nickels you acquired recently are beautiful.

Another Great coin, but I don't think theTPG's will go with 65. The bag mark on the cheek is what will bring it down. I'll say 64.... but then again, it's all in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?
