Picked up a Dansco Kennedy book and it has holes for sms. how do you tell a special mint set coin from any other? does it have a unique mint mark?

If they are for the 40% coins there were proof like issues in sms. I cant remember the exact dates but is that what it is?

This is a good question. Other than busting up a special mint set, I do not know. I do know that they are more prooflike in appearance than those minted and released for circulation of the same date. As far as I know there are no distinguishing marks to tell them apart. I would like to know myself.
I do know that the dies and/or blank planchets were polished and that these coins were handled with a little more care than the regular issues. I think the 1965 SMS coins can be the toughest to tell any difference compared to 1966 and 1967. It seems quality was a bit better for the later years.

They were not proof sets or proof coins, they didn't make proof sets from 1965 to 1967. This was the reason for the special mint sets. They were made to meet collector demand for a year set to collect from the mint.

They are proof like coins, those were the years I though. They look like proofs but bear no mintmarks. I have a bunch of them I found from a collection dump... see my posted threads...

They are unmistakable as sms coins, I thought they were proofs. Luckily they dont carry a signifigant premium if I am correct. I would say ~$4 unless someone else jumps in and corrects me. Ill have some up for trade soon if you are interested.

There are some very vague diagnostics you can use to differentiate..
