I was going through some change and found a 'The last ANZACs' $1 coin. I had seen some of these before in special covers and I knew them to be special mint issues and not intended to be in circulation so I picked it out.
My questions are; why might this be in circulaltion (Surely the person who spent it would have known!) and how often are coins like this found. Also has anyone found anything like this?
Thanks.

nice find, usually the person that spends them, isn't the owner, wouldn't be the first time sticky fingers had been in someones collection or raided the piggy bank/ tobacco tin.

Quite a lot of Non Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) ends up in circulation. I doubt that it's the original owner of them that releases them though as cnsjock has already stated.

I'd say the majority of them have been 'lifted' from their owners, most probably in a burglary, and the burglar has in many instances taken them along to a Casino or Club & put them in the Pokies, then cashed in and hey presto, a completely different lot of coins that are nothing like what was put in. In other words, laundering stolen money.

The Pokies won't reject them, and many of the other patrons don't look very closely at the coins they get, so they just keep circulating until some coin collector 'finds' and rescues them.

That's my theory anyway.

It's the most likely explanation, but by no means certain.

I have a friend in the coin club. Whenever the RAM sold special mintmarked or countermarked dollar coins at the Brisbane ANDA show, he bought a few and then went down to the Valley after the show and deliberately spent them at the takeaway.

Sure, he makes a loss on the deal each time, but he's not trying to make a profit. He's trying to encourage any potential new coin collectors out there by randomly putting a few "scarce" coins in circulation for someone to find.

For NCLT coins in change, personally, I've only ever found a "Last ANZACS" dollar and a 1994 proof set dollar.

The only one I have found is an ANZACS as well. An M mint mark.

@Sap
Your friend sounds like a very kind person! Maybe I got my coin from him. Thanks for your reply.

@latman100
It appears that the ANZAC coins are the most common ones to find in circualtion. I wonder why...
Anyway, mine has a C mintmark. Thanks for your reply.

I can't believe my lcuk! Today I found a 2007 Sydney Harbour Bridge $1 coin in my change. It's relatively good condition; only a few tiny scratches.
