I was wondering........
If I was to visit a country
that now uses the Euro and
I happened to have pre-Euro
coinage(same country)with me,
could I still spend it?
Would I be able to exchange it
at a bank?
The answer is probably ovious,
but not to me,
Ken

Hmmmm? I know when I was in Denmark, the German town bordering Denmarks Southern border (they are Euro), still accepted Denmarks Kroner. Maybe it's the same other places too. Your question is a little different. Let's see if others know :-)

It depends on the country. Even if they are still legal to change, you would have to go to the Central Bank itself to exchange it.

Here's the list of valid dates to exchange. If you have French francs, they are all expired. Tell me about it... I still have 300 or 400 francs in coins :/

In Greece If you have drachma coins you can't exchange them because the final day expired in 2010.
Notes are still accepted in Central Bank till 2012

Depending on where you live you might want to check with a large bank right here. Such banks as Bank of America have branches all over the USA and officers in those Banks would either know for sure or know how to contact someone that would know the legality of such trades.

Interesting,thanks to all!
I guess the same type of thing(s)
would apply to English coinage
when the switch was made from the
old pence to the new? That was sometime
in the late 60s,I think?

On February 15th, 1971, the switch was made to the decimal system -- one pound = 100 Pence
