Well it certainly has corrosion, and the date seems right (the dates for 1796 are a bit different) so I don't think its fake at least...

I'm not gonna pay $1000 for it though.

Mine's not the best but the date pattern seems the same:

And since we were also talking about Liberty Caps: (Not much better condition though)

Breen 16 his Obv 15 rev H S-110 Die state VIII maybe state IX. Easy to identify crack joins 96 crack from hair to 1, die chips in front of the throat, the arc crack in the field in front of the face and of course the Cud above RTY extending out into the right field. On the reverse the big die chips below the E in UNITED nails it. Probably the most common 1796 draped bust a high R-2 maybe around 600 to 700 pieces estimated. When I stated collecting them it was THE most common but at that time it was a high R-3, about 200 to 300 estimated.

No 1796 draped bust is truely an easy coin to find. and once you get past S-110 and S-93 they get a LOT tougher. Six R-4, thirteen R-5, and one R6. And that doesn't include the NC's (1 R-5, 2 R-6, 2 R-7, and 2 R-8) I also think several of the R-3+ pieces are actually still R-4's as well.

I have often wondered where all the 1796 Draped Bust cents went. They have three times the mintage of the 96 caps but you see ten caps for every draped bust and only one of the caps is rare.

Yeah, I bought one a bit less nice than Moe's the other day and I had to pay for it. Indeed, depending on the reverse, by looking only at the date this could either be one of the rarest or most common of the '96 DB's available - so it warrants investigation.

I'm gonna have me a really nice '96 DBLC one day... =)

By the way, great answer Conder - thank you!

I *almost* bought this S-98 today. In the final minutes, I chickened out. I felt the price I'd pay was too strong if I needed to flip it, and with that much money tied up in a coin and the corrosion problems, it's just too tough to grade for me. That, and the coin just wasn't "speaking" to me. I didn't "have" to have it, so I let it go.

Looks like a nice strong Fine details, but it was too hard for me to tell what effect the corrosion would have on the price. Anybody have any ideas?
