Hey all,
I've finally decided to get into half roll hunting. My wife is pregnant and at home, so this is a great team activity we can both work on to (hopefully) raise a little extra money and stockpile something to leave our little girl one day.
We've done the smaller denominations before with fair success, but I'm ready for the big leagues. Some questions.
1) What's the best bank to dump halves at? I'd prefer to establish an account somewhere with a coin counting machine that has a zero-cost counting tab. Failing that, what's the best way to "dump" the unwanted halves?
2) If I just ask my local bank I know the tellers at (they are good people) for boxes, they seem to always get String & Sons. Is this OK for half hunting or is there a better way to get my halves?
3) I'm planning on only doing about $500 a week. Is this worth my time?
Any other tips you guys want to provide would be greatly appreciated. I thought about posting this in the half-finds thread, but it occurred to me this might be a better place.
Thanks!

getting rid of the halves is the biggest problem. If I were you I would try and find a coin counter like you said. Banks will get tired of you very easy if you start bringing them a bunch of halves every week. Boxes are good to search through. A friend of mine gets bags and they are better, just b.c you dont have to unravel each roll.. 500 a week is fine as long as its not tying any money up that you might need right away

Thanks. So there's no easy, "transparent" way to get rid of the halves?

Do you regularly spend large quantities of cash for purchases? I suppose you could use them to pay your taxes, but that would not be very frequent. Other then that, bank coin counters are the best way to go.

But how do bank coin counters work? Do the tellers have to eventually go through the coins? I had a bank manager be a real jerk to me once over bringing in some halves and I want to avoid anything close to that again.

I have yet to encounter a bank to deny service accepting half dollars in exchange for cash. Although they may not be happy to serve you.
I've dealt with Citibank and Bank of America.
Don't really like either bank, or any bank for that matter but it works.
Good luck. $500/week ought to work well.

Quote: So there's no easy, "transparent" way to get rid of the halves? the coin counter is your best bet. maybe you could ask the dump bank if its ok to bring them in. I dont think they can refuse them but you dont want to make enemies either. Coin |Counter is best bet

I use accounts at several different banks. I will then take them to other towns and dump them, usually at the business tellers window. Deposit them into your account. Don't ask to exchange them for paper money. I have a BB&T branch that I go to to dump and the tellers love it when I bring them in. They know that rolls of halves can contain silver and they will hunt the rolls themselves. Get customer rolled halves anytime you can. I have had my best finds come from them.

Thanks for all the help, guys. My bank is ordering a box, but seems to not be sure if there are $500 in halves to a box or $1000.

I use TD Bank to dump. I don't have an account there, and they have never asked me if I do have one. I also pickup boxes of pennies and nickels there sometimes.

My other tip is to not dump them at the bank you order them from, or even another branch of the same bank. 1, it will be even more likely to irritate the tellers, and 2, you might just end up searching the same coins over and over.

Thanks, guys. Anyone know of a bank chain in the Atlanta area (preferably Northside) friendly to this kind of stuff. My main bank is Wachovia where I do all my regular banking, and they are my "pick up" place, but I really need a drop spot.

I only go to wachovia banks for searching, since my parents only have accounts with them. I only check the sides of the rolls for silver, then slide them right back in but you could look for errors, proofs.

One warning about counting machines - they tend to miss coins sometimes. If you're searching Lincolns and you come up 4 cents short it's no big deal. But if they miss 4 halves you're out 2 bucks. That can add up in a hurry.
I'm actually speaking from experience. I dump my searched cents in a free coin counter at my CU all the time. Once after searching some halves, I dumped $80.00 in the counter. It only counted $79.50. Thankfully I have a good enough relationship with the tellers that they believed me and credited my missing $.50 to my account.

I use 1 branch to dump my coins, and order from another branch. PNC is my dump bank, and in my area they have about 8-10 locations all within a 20 minute drive. I just switch up which ones I dump off each load at. This way bank #1 will not see me for 8 weeks, as I have bank # 2/3/4/5/6/7/8 to dump at the following weeks. I always get String & Son boxes, and they have done me good thus far. No super mega boxes yet, but I average at least 1 or 2 pieces of silver per box. Of course you will encounter dry spells, but do not let that demoralize you, keep it up! One piece of advice, DO NOT SIDE SEARCH! A lot of 40%'s will slip by you! I had 2 40%'s today that I would have never known if I only checked the sides. Another side note, your $500 will do you well. Imagine trying to offload $2000 of halves every week. Some tellers really don't like seeing me lug in bags of halves.
