A Retained Cud is created by a displaced broken portion of the die that has not yet fallen away. You will see the break going from rim to rim and the portion of the design contained by the break is not flush with the rest of the design. Once the broken portion of the die falls away, you will have a regular Cud and all that is left at the site of the break is a shapeless blob.
