Very good pics. also of the coin. Just noticed the sellers name. He's well known in the field.

I've met Fred Weinberg at Long Beach. I have also purchased a few coins from him. I believe he still advises PCGS on error coins. He is not a grader so he can still sell coins.

That's fascinating! How many dimes were minted after that one? Not many I guess.

This is one of 6 or 7 shattered obverse (anvil) dies known from 1997. This is the most severe.

very cool, but it actually reminds me of the original Alien movie.
I'm also curious to see the top bid...

amazing! Its hard to imagine the force that those are impacted and how many times they must endure that impact before this happens.

Now that one is neat, for some reason it reminds me of Hannibal Lecter wearing that safety mask so he couldn't bite anyone...

A Retained Cud is created by a displaced broken portion of the die that has not yet fallen away. You will see the break going from rim to rim and the portion of the design contained by the break is not flush with the rest of the design. Once the broken portion of the die falls away, you will have a regular Cud and all that is left at the site of the break is a shapeless blob.
