$75 for $25 worth of gold is a little much. Nice little coin though, maybe in a few years I'll be be able to pick one up for a lot less if the value follows the path of most NCLT stuff.

I like the design, but yeah...that's pretty small. To put in perspective, a bronze cent is 3.2 grams. And gold is over twice as dense. It must be very thin.

It is! I misread. Thought is was 10g not 5g. I never do that again.

Quote: maybe in a few years I'll be be able to pick one up for a lot less if the value follows the path of most NCLT stuff. Why should it fall in value? Most (if not all) of the Mint's limited-mintage numismatics tend to appreciate once sold out at the mint. Check local coin shops, online dealers, and ebay listings to see for yourself. There is no trend I can see of Mint coins (particularly gold) falling in value.

In my opinion, time coupled with rising bullion prices often results in most of these gold coins eventually going for near spot. This is especially true for the half ounce gold commemoratives. I am talking years, not a few months after being sold out. Charlton catalogues bear this out so I won't post a table of RCM list prices versus current values. Gold goes up like a staircase but down like an elevator. Adjusted for inflation, it still has not reached the high established in the 30s. I see $400 gold again before I see $3,000 gold. Since its like the Eagle, a bullion coin, the chance for the speculator to loose a great deal is entirely possible. I only buy what I like, but 5g of gold at $74 is overpriced in anyone's book.
I admit though....Its a beautiful coin! I've loved the Caribou coins since I was a boy growing up on Lake Ontario.

^^^ I do like this coin as well. The small gold coins have a certain charm/appeal to them (thinking 1/25th series). Is this the only coins in the series?

^ Yes, this is the only 0.5g coin so far; I believe there are more to come.
As for price, we all know the coin (among others) is 'overpriced' with respect to gold content/spot price, but that's not what most people are paying for (design, uniqueness, low mintage, etc)...

Thanks defone. Do you know what the others will be or when?
Agreed it is a collector coin not a bullion coin - they are different markets. When great artwork is on the coin it makes all the difference.

Hah, if this were a bullion coin, who the heck would be stacking these? If I wanted something small I would go for Credit Suisse gram bars. Cheaper and certified. This is definitely a collectors' coin.

^^^ Yes Libertad - IT IS A COLLECTORS COIN. It is has been stated a few times in this thread already. IT IS NOT BULLION TO BE STACKED. As again it has stated a few times already in this thread. I would repeat that again but the obvious on some people...
I don't think there is any question as to the content of this coin. Don't think Credit Suisse has great artwork on it.

Honestly I can't see anything, my vision isn't what it used to be... so I have to zoom a bit.

Still a great design, and well-reproduced at even a quarter of the original size.

The small gold coins are appealing. They have a certain charm. Hope they do come out with a 2011 version of this.

The Caribou design has been retained for this latest Canadian quarter..and the first ever gold quarterI'm sure others like myself now want a gold dime nickel and penny in the series.. I could be wrong but if 11.00mm is the quarter size..does the mint have the technology to make the others...just a thought....
