I purchased this coin as a with-arrows type example a few years back. It had obviously been dipped and had that typical bright and washed-out look. Some months ago I took it out of its flip and placed in on a Taco Bell napkin on my window sill. My hope was that the bright surfaces would develop a more natural, toned appearance. Every once in a while I would dampen the napkin which I imagine could speed up the toning process. This first set of photos was taken on June 18, 2010. At that point the coin had been on the sill for several weeks and the reverse had already darkened quite a bit. The obverse still looked over-dipped.

This second photo set was taken today. The reverse is about the same but the obverse I think shows a lot of improvement. Comments?

Going good. I'dlike to see it in the auction forum. I like the screamin' LIBERTY, bold date and I do the arrow types.

The obverse is taking on some color for sure. I did the Taco Bell napkin experiment last year and did not get this good a result. Right right I've got an 1829 Bust Dime on a block of wood. : )

Experiment with a warm hard boiled egg put the egg in a ziploc in one corner and coin in other corner, close bag, break hard boiled egg, toning should take a minute or so. flip coin till even. voila.

FYI:
The piece is listed in Bree as B-3286.

"incomplete Mintmark"

"Upper half of mintmark missing (obliquely punched into die).

No rarity estimate stated by Breen, but if he did it would be BS anyway.
He made up most of his statistics.

He also mentions not is Ahwash.

Now there's a new one. I've heard of the paper napkin, wood, paper book, sunlight, and few more; but never the hard boiled egg. I guess you could make a sandwich right after if you do it a lunch time. I'm going to have to check on the chemical make up of an egg. I know there DNA in there but never thought enough to tone metal when cooked. Or is it the trapped gas from cooking that tones the coin? Oh and is that a 12 minutes egg or the way Martha Stewart does them?

I can see the details coming back from the TPG now; "Liberty has egg on face and needs more Mayo and Chopped Dill".

OK, I apologize! But seriously guys, does that really work? I've been collecting for almost 30 years and it's been 45 years since my last Chemistry Lab; please inquiring minds need to know how and why.

Eggs contain sulfur compounds, and sulfur tones silver.

A book of matches and the coin in a sealed sandwich container will also tone it. Because of the sulphur in the matches.
