Good morning. I am planning to start collecting these coins. It seems to me an interesting collection, not too tough to get except a couple of coins, neither too expensive. My plans are to buy coins from VF to XF, maybe some AU. Do you have some good advice to give to me? Is it worth collecting these coins?
Thank you!

Awesome choice in coins my friend. Victorian nickels are highly underrated and very inexpensive to collect. As a matter of fact most can be purchased in Mintstate grades for less than $600.00 so if you are targeting the EF-40 to AU-50 range you will be flying! Compare the mintages of these pieces to some of the U.S. coins of the same Era and you will see they are very inexpensive to collect.Good luck and welcome to C.C.F.! Glenn

Thank you for your answer, glenzy1. I didn't say before: I live in Italy. I think that I will be able to find the coins in a cheaper price compared to Canada (maybe 10 - 20 % less). This is one reason why I will not look for them in UNC. It is hard to find them in UNC condition in Europe. I don't want to spend my money in importation fees!

excellent choice and because of where you live it will be a fun collection as short of auctions you will have to search them out
good luck and keep us updated

I know, it will take some time to find them. Right now, I have only the 1874, plain 4, in F-12. It will be fun! Thank you. I will!

Good luck with your collection. I also was interested in Canadian nickels and the silver 5 cent pieces. However I never did much about Victorian issues.
I am glad to see that you already have one coin. The comment I would make otherwise is to ask if you know how small these coins are. I think some collectors would find it less fun to collect these tiny coins, especially if they are used to larger pieces. There's just something about having a good solid weight of metal in your hand, which you don't get with these coins.

I think the best way to start a collection, is to buy the very best you can afford. Go for the higher MS grades. They will pay off in the long run.
Just my opinion :)

Interestingly, I have a rather satisfying type set of NON silver 5 cent pieces.

I see mixed opinions: it seems that somebody likes them, others not. Answering @Powderfinger (sorry, I don't know how to quote): that would be a side collection, I do like larger pieces, like Savoy or Italian 5 Lire, but I don't dislike smaller coins.
In those days I looked online: it seems very hard to find the 5 cents coins in Europe in a good shape. I have always seen poor conservations. I will take a better look!
