here is a link to alot of pictures of some specific VAM's by year and mint mark http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/Morgan+VAMs+By+Date just click on which date/mm you want to look at, then click the link to the specific VAM# and it gives description of the specific VAM and pictures. I have added quite a few of these pictures myself so some of them some of you may have already seen before and I am sure some you havent. Some are listed that aren't in the VAM book also so its a good place to look, its a work in process so it doesn't have every VAM known yet but hopefully with everyones help it will someday

Actually, I doubt that a lot of people have all the VAM's memorized. When identifying a VAM, most people just go to their " VAM Book" and look up the year and mintmark, and see if their coin matches any of the ones shown.

VAMs number in the thousands - I doubt anyone, even Leroy Van Allen himself, has them all in memory. Heck, I can't even keep track of 1921.

I just became fairly certain that I have a 1921-P VAM4. Wide reed with the doubled n. What magnification does anyone think I would need to be certain. It is a top 100, but I'm not really sure what that means. Coin is probably only in AU. I wish I could take pictures, but I doubt I could get a good enough one to show the doubled n. I will try.

10x is marginal, 30x would give you enough information to be sure. Check here:

http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/1921-P+VAM-4

The magnification in those pics is about 50x.

The Top 100 VAM's are a list chosen by Dr. Michael Fey and Jeff Oxman, two prominent VAM collectors, and published in a book under their names. It's a pretty representative list of some of the more spectacular VAM's out there, but by no means inclusive of all the VAM's which have great collector value.
