So, you have an AU key date coin that you know will get a details grade because it has been lightly cleaned.

I've seen a few threads on "pocket pieces".

Would you carry it around as a pocket piece until the hairlines are gone? Or just bite the bullet and be happy it's genuine?

So, I guess my question is: which is better? AU58 details, or AU 53/55 with the hairlines gone?

Before I get "depends on the coin", in this particular case we are talking about a '32-D Washington.

I would be too paranoid about carrying a 1932-D Washington quarter as a pocket piece, too easy to accidentally spend it As for wearing away hairlines, You would probably have to take it down to AU50/EF45 to remove them thoroughly enough to get a regular grade and even then you still may get stuck with a Details grade.

personally, I would take the AU58 Details over the XF. But that's JMO. Also I guess it depend on how noticeable the cleaning is. Some people don't care about cleaning when its light and not obvious.

Maybe try the window sill trick.

So, from a pricing standpoint, whether buying or selling, is there a "rule of thumb"? Down a grade? 2?

If you were to buy an AU58 cleaned coin, what kind of grade/money would you expect to pay?

There really is no rule of thumb because not all cleanings are created equally, you have to individually judge the merits and detractions of each problem coin. Experience plays a big role in properly valuing them and that is how many new collectors get burned by overpaying.

If the cleaning artifacts do not bother you, then leave it alone. There are too many things that can go wrong with the correction process. In my opinion, it is not worth the risk of losing the coin or causing additional damage to it.
