Hi. I just got all excited to spot an odd Canadian 1974 quarter jump out at me. It had no reeded edge like all the others, so I checked, and yes, they're supposed to be reeded. On closer inspection with my magnifying glass, I noticed faint appearances of redded. I'm guess, due to how shiny smooth the flat edge is, that the ridges were worn down in some kind of machine. A counting machine perhaps? Sorry I can't show a photo presently (still no joy with getting my scanner happening again yet)

I'm sure some of you know what I mean though and can give an educated guess as to what could cause the smoothed out/worn reeded edge? Thanks!

If the diameter of the coin is a bit smaller, and the rims are a bit wider, it's possible it went through several cycles of an industrial washer or dryer.

Actually just eyeballing and looking also through the magnifying glass, the coin looks same circumferance and size as the normal reeded one, but the flat of the reedless rim IS a bit wider than the normal one. ;)

In that case the coin was probably "spooned" - no, that's not a cuddling position in this case! It means the coin was tapped with an object such as a spoon, or on a desk which resulted in a flattened edge. Some are quite impressive and very round.

Silver is a much more malleable metal - There are websites that teach you how to make a ring from a silver quarter by spooning it

I think I've heard of that kind of "spooning" of coins then. (the other kind too :D ) That may well be what happened to it. Thanks for your feedback on this, Splatto.

PS: the coin is VERY nicked up both sides. Am wondering about washers and dryers or even slot machines wear too. There IS a Casino near town and maybe this coin has had a rough life in the slot machines
