Hi.

I'm interested in finding out about errors and varieties for this year that anyone in here might know about.

I've found mentions online about this year to watch out for foreign blank errors. Does anyone have more information about this? I can't seem to find much details about it but I have been scooping out and saving every 1980 cent I get and setting them aside until I know what to look for and what they may be worth as planchet errors. I don't want to send any back into circulation until I know more.

The foreign blank would be less weight and possibly some weaker strike areas to look for, and hard to recognize by looking if I remember correctly what I read.

Thanks :)

Here are two coins struck on foreign blanks that are dated 1980. Why are you interested in only 1980 dated coins?

I'm interested in learning about all the Canadian and US cents. The reason for interest in wanting to know more about the 1980 Canada cent was because I read about the wrong planchet/metal strikes that year and that they were worth about $75 (high grade) stated in the site. I didn't bookmark the site so can't show where I saw that info. I'm not clear if its a transitional strike or the wrong planchets were somehow stocked in the machines.

I'm just trying to verify this info and maybe learn of other varieties for 1980, to watch for.

The Canadian mint strikes coins for foreign countries and has done so for many years. Errors of this type occured quite frequently since the early seventies. The coin you were probably referencing for $75 is most likely the one I pictured struck on a New Zealand 1 cent planchet. They are relatively common, especially the ones dated 1979. The canadian mint also struck coins on their own wrong planchets, such as a quarter struck on a nickel blank. Have fund collectly and learning about errors.

Dottir...The better and nicer error coins will increase in interest and value as the mint is always getting better in quality control..

Years 1979 & 1980 were great for errors...

Here is a link to the mint site for Canadian coins struck on foreign planchets..enjoy..

Thanks Zimmy and D.

I AM having fun :) and I've noticed for sure about the 1979's having a lot of errors etc. I already found some doubled 979's. Apparently 1978's also had lots of errors, judging by the ones listed. I think I'll hang onto any errors or varieties I come across no matter what shape they're in. That goes for other dates and pennies in general, what with the newer quality control you mention, and the news and agitation every so often about completely doing away with the penny.

That Coinscan site is a GREAT resource! What an incredible amount of work and time was put into it. Amazing.

I'm hoping I'll be able to get set up to buy and sell a bit at some point in the nearer future too. Meanwhile, there's nothing stopping me from trading sometimes as far as I know. Or buying even if I get setup with paypal or something. Pennies and some other coins seem more than affordable to start buying the odd cent just to have the dates!

I can see already too that I'll have to get my hands on a coin scale to weigh some as thats the only way to indicate a wrong planchet for some. Like the 1980?

Sorry to butt in here. But, I'm following your threads closely because I want to learn more about Canadian coinage as well. And you keep asking questions that I would like to know the answer to, too!

In reference to the scale, it is a most necessary tool that you will use time and time again. And not just for wrong planchets.

Sometimes you have a change in composition of the metals, as is the case with the 1982 US cents. Some are copper, some are zinc. You would use it for any coins that "look funny" and help identify their authenticity, and the list goes on.

You can find some nice, cheap digital ones that go to 2 decimal places (make sure it at least goes to 2) for about $10.

I'm glad my questions bring answers that others want to know about too then

I also follow threads where people are asking questions. Thats where the thread subject/topic headers are important for threads I guess. So people can know quickly what its and decide whether they want to read a thread or not. There are SO many posts in these forums, I ain't got all day ya know

Thanks for the advice about the scale!

Another helpful tool is to use the "Active topics" at the top of the page, then you can adjust it to see new threads and new replies already categorized. It's awfully handy!

Thanks. I also just discovered that if I click on my name it brings up my profile and shows me any posts I start or am subscribed to, and indicate new posts since last visit. I'm finding that topic notifications emails from here straggle into my email account sometimes a day late. Often many hours late. So I just come looking.

They had a little issue with the e-mails earlier. I think it's fixed now. I usually get my topic notifications immediately when someone posts.

I'm used to forum glitches ScoobieDue. I've been a member of different forums for years and even adminned some so expect the unexpected

Thanks for the Welcome CladHunter13, and gathering up and posting all the great links. Some I found already, some I didn't so thanks! And of course my googling WAY more often than not leads me right back to THIS forum!! Just goes to show how popular and how diverse the information and posts in here are. This place must get a lot of traffic.

I sure love how the net has so many forums communities of different interests where like-interested people can find each other and share info and talk. If you can't find a community of people in your own community, you'll find them online all congregating in some forum community and you can just jump in too. Gotta love it to be able to talk to people whose eyes don't glaze over and change the subject because they aren't interested in the same things you are!

Its AWESOME for housebound people too (disabilities, aged, hermits etc) you can still take part and be part of a community.
