Here is the scoop. Inspired by the 1916-D Merc story from the junk shop, I stopped into a pawn shop today. I know this won't be nearly as good as the Merc story, but I wanted to share.

I bought 4 rolls uncirculated lincoln cents, 1 of them wheats. He also had a tube about 4/5 full of cents, so I got them all for $10. I also had some loose cents in there I needed to help fill the book.

Anyway, right in the middle of the tube was this.

So, anyone want to help the newbie with a grade opinion? It is officially the oldest coin in my collection. Also, how did I do with this purchase? If this cent hadn't been there, did I overpay?

Thanks for any opinions.

QS

PS this is my 50th post, wooohooo..

It looks like LIBERTY may be complete, just faint. Sometimes these don't photograph well. If it is complete, it's at least an F12 coin. If it is complete and clear, it could be a VF20. This coin alone is worth over $15, probably closer to $20, so you made a great purchase.

Without this coin, I still think it was a pretty good buy.

Hi Quickstudy

You did good, sounds like you made a great deal and the Indian is a bonus !!

I agree with the F-12 grade ,at least from the pics.Makes the coin worth between 15 and 20 dollars.

Thanks. From the Red Book, I had this coin somewhere between F-12 and VF-20. The liberty is full and shows signs of even wear. Not the biggest find on the board, but the "I didn't expect to find that" value made me .

Nice find. The more rolls you look at, the better chance you have of finding something truly spectacular!

I'd say it's at least VF-20. LIBERTY appears to be complete, and the lower line on the headband below LIBERTY is complete. That would give it at least VF-20 by Fly-In standards which are mostly a bit tougher than commercial standards. Also, the lower ribbon (where the diamonds are) is completely separated from the hair curls, which would *usually* indicate an EF coin by those same standards, except that this one seems to just lack enough detail for an EF grade and it's harder to use that criterion for the copper-nickel cents. I'd say VF-20+ overall. I'm pretty sure this coin has more detail than the picture is showing based on the major devices I see.
