Hello everyone. A friend of mine has inherited a fair sized coin collection. He needs to sell the entire collection and has asked that I help him do so. Problem is, most of the coins are non-US with a large portion being Canadian. I know a little about Canadian coinage but I also know that I'm not well enough informed to feel confident about getting the best price out of his coins.

I'm especially concerned about overlooking some, if any, of the coins that might contain some added value due to age and or rarity.

I plan to sell most of the coins via ebay. But I'm open to other avenues if anyone has any suggestions.

I'm going to post a couple of images here. These first ones are just some general/overview photos to give an idea of what I'm dealing with. I plan to post more later and will try to provide some more detailed pics of certain individual coins upon request. The pics may not be the best right now but I am planning to acquire a scanner within the next week or so.

Take a look at the photos and please offer any info/advice on any of the coins that might stand out to you.

Thank you all for any help, advice, or criticism you might have to offer.

By the way, this is my first time attempting to load images on this forum. So please bear with me if I didn't get it quite right.

The confederation dollar is about $10 or so, if you've got the COA. I don't know about some of the coins in 2x2s, some look like they've been cleaned. Colonialacres.com has a lot of prices up, though you could just get the charlton coin guide, and look there.

It looks like there are some large cents in there. the series from 1858-1901 with queen victoria on obverse has a pretty loyal following. If you post any photos of them, I'm sure you would get some opinions.

rodime - Thanks for the help. Not sure if some of the coins have been cleaned or not. It looks like one or two of the large cents, not in the 2x2's, have most likely been cleaned. There a few other nice coins that I'd feel pretty confident about saying that they haven't.
I checked out colonialacres. Thanks for that.
I know I'm going to seem like a newbie, but what is COA?

nybird - Yes there are a few large cents in the group. Some are pretty worn while others look pretty decent. There are five of the large cents that aren't in any sort of keeper. The dates are; 1881, '59, '88, 1901, & 1916. Then there are another 4 large cents in 2x2's. The dates on those are; 1900, 1901, 1911, & 1913. I'll try to get some better images of these and get them on here for everyone to look at.

There is another coin in one of these groups that I'm curious about. I'm not even sure which side is obverse or reverse. I'll just post what it says on the coin. On one side it reads; "BANK TOKEN", "ONE HALF-PENNY". On the other side it reads "BANK OF UPPER CANADA" 1857. So I'm not sure if this was something that was used in circulation or if it is an actual token-(?) Any ideas?

There seems to be some pretty interesting stuff in this bunch of coins. So I look forward to talking with you all more about them.

Thank you!

My first step would be to split the coins into denomination groups ( 1,5,10,25 cents).I would then make a list for each group starting with the oldest date and try to give each coin a grade. It would make it easy to establish a fair value of what you have.
Common average circulated coins will not bring big money.Check to see if you have some varieties or more rare ones.I would send the more valuable to a Canadian TPG before placing them on ebay.
I haven't seen any really rare stuff in here but did not checked too much. The cased nickel dollars are not expensive.Your bank token depending on the grade should sell well.

The 1857 token is fairly common, you can see thaem regularly on ebay for around $10 depending on condition. The 1881, 88, and 59 are all fairly collectable, I personally have about two dozen of just those dates. Depends on variety and condition. So at least those 4 are of some value. enjoy!

I agree with rodime, I have dealt with Colonial Acres for several years and they seem very fair. I will look up prices of coins and compare their list with the coins I have, and that gives me a better idea.

Thank you all for your input.

COA = Cert. of Authenticity - Makes sense. Thanks kyrio.

I can see now what I really want/need is to get a scanner so I can post some better quality close-ups of the coins. Especially the older/rarer ones. Since I'm not under any time constraints to get them sold, it would be nice to learn as much as I can about Canadian coinage in the process. I greatly appreciate being able to draw on the vast knowledge base found collectively from the members here on this forum.

May look at my library for a Charltons as well.

It doesn't stop with Canadian coins either. Ther looks to be some pretty old British, Mexican, & French coins. Just to name a few. There's just a couple of ancient coins too.

So please give me a few days. Hopefully I will then be back with some satisfactory scanned images . Stay tuned while I see what I can come up with.

Anyone have a good used scanner for sale?

I'd be interested in the french coins, once you decide to sell! As for a scanner, try your local value village / salvation army / thrift shop. Most of the time, people throw out scanners when they reformat a computer, and have lost the driver disk.

Yes, those thrift stores & similar have been on my mind. We have several in this small town I live in. I may even find the time to check out a couple of those this weekend. Yard sales are big this time of year too. Just may scan some of them while I'm out and about as well.

A workmate of mine found a working scanner at one of those thrift places about a year ago. I think he said he gave less than $2 for it!

If all else fails, I may have to give in and go to 'Wally World' or Office Depot. I think I've got the wife convinced that it's a "must have" item. So that's half the battle !

Finally got myself a scanner. Woo Hoo! I am going to love this thing. Much better images & resolution than my old cammera!

So here are a few images as promised. I figure I will start with the large cents and then move on up through time and denominations.

I hope you enjoy them. After all this may be the most fun/interesting part of this forum - the sharing of images of the coins we have .

Any input on any of the coins I'm posting is greatly appreciated.

Here's a couple images of the 1857 Token that nybird commented on previously:

nybird, you had asked before for a better pic of the 1881 large cent. If you can't tell from the image, that one's bent a little, in additon to the obvious wear. What do you think about it & the others?

rodime, I will be postig some pics of the french coins soon but in the appropriate thread. I would realy like some input on the composition of those. Most seem to be aluminum while some might be bronze (brassy colored), while still others may have some silver content. I'm thinking primarily about the 10 centimes with the hole in them (?) as far silver content goes.
