Hello everyone. I recently decided to start collecting coins as I feel like it's a fun hobby and a good investment. As I feel like it could be one of the easier sets to collect I've decided to start with wheat pennies. My first purchase was a bulk order of the supposedly "unsearched" pennies. Regardless if they are or not, I felt like it would be a good way to get my book half full.

After milling through a few hundred I came across one that has a "fat" 9 in the 1951. I will post pictures as soon as the wife comes home with the camera, but is this something that's normal? I haven't seen anything like it yet looking at the prior hundred or so pennies. It's not beat down because it has a clear mint mark (or so this newbie thinks) all the way around the edge? Pictures to come in the next few hours, but any comments in advance are appreciated.

Thanks for having me on the forums!

Welcome to the site! Without a photo I'm only guessing. It could be a worn die.

welcome!

pictures would be helpful but if I had to guess I would say it's die wear like bill said or it could possibly be hit, almost anything could do that kind of PMD to a coin

So here's some horrible news. The wife decided to put the coins away that I had laying out on the table because we had company coming over. I have since been digging through my pennies to try and find this coin, but I haven't had any luck yet. If/when I find it again I will post it, but I have looked more into "worn die's" and I think that's what happened.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
